Flights N and O: Archived Directions to Colorado Missile Silo Sites

This page preserves, as an archived historical record, a set of driving directions to Cold War-era nuclear missile silo and launch control sites in northeastern Colorado. The material was compiled by Colorado Communities for Justice and Peace and was last edited on July 24, 2003. It is presented here only as a historical document. Nothing below should be read as a current description of any site, road, or condition.

What the Archive Contains

The directions are grouped into two routes, called Flights N and O. Each entry pairs a site with a name, followed by turn-by-turn instructions beginning from a named town or highway junction. The archive does not explain the naming scheme, and this page does not attempt to do so.

Flight N

Flight N lists eleven sites. Most directions begin at the junction of State Highway 14 and County Road 129 at New Raymer. From there, entries describe travel north, east, or west on county roads and state highways, with distances given in miles and turns noted as left or right. Several entries note whether the site is on the left or the right. One entry, for a missile associated with Pat Schroeder, describes a route with frequent turns.

Flight O

Flight O also lists eleven sites. Several directions begin at Grover and proceed east on County Road 122 before turning onto other county roads. Others begin at the New Raymer junction and travel north on County Road 129 before turning. One entry begins at Keota.

The Revised Note

The archive includes a note dated July 24, 2003, labeled as improved directions for one Flight O site. The note states that the original instructions were misleading in two places. It explains that a road out of New Raymer continues farther than the original text suggested, that the road curves and changes names while remaining the same road, and that a later turn leads past another site before continuing north. The note advises marking an odometer because a road may or may not be signed.

Limits of This Record

These directions reflect the roads and landmarks as described at the time of the 2003 edit. Road names, signs, surfaces, and access may have changed since then. The archive does not establish present access to any location, and it makes no claim about current ownership, condition, or use of any site. Readers should treat every route as a historical artifact rather than guidance for travel.
